5-Hydroxytryptophan, 5-HTP, is naturally produced in the body as a chemical by-product of the protein building block, L-trytophan.

5-HTP is also produced commercially as an extract from the seeds of an African native plant, Griffonia simplificola.

This supplement works by boosting the body's production of serotonin, by working with the brain and central nervous system. Serotonin produced by the body affects our sleep, appetite, body temperature, sexual behavior and pain sensation.

Sleep disorders, depression, anxiety, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, binge eating, obesity, PMS, ADHS and PMDD are all potentially treated by 5-HTP.

5-HTP has also been used along with other medications to help with seizure disorders and Parkinson's disease.

Evidence has shown that 5-HTP may be beneficial in treating depression as well as fibromyalgia symptoms including pain, morning stiffness and sleeplessness.

Works Great for Mild forms of Depression

If you have mild depression, and are otherwise a stable individual, 5 htp is great for stabilizing mood swings and dealing with anxiety. It really does work, and it's antidepressant effects are just as real as the regular SSRI's. The plus is the side effects are much less. No major side effects at all, (insomnia, fatigue, sweating). For short term non bipolar (mild) depression, it is great.

Helps me relax

Though research I came across 5-htp and the benefits when used with other supplements and after a ton of trial and error have come up with a base mix that finally helps me relax. I don't use it to help me sleep per say as I use a real light dose, more-so just to calm my nerves after work and any other time. I quit drinking last year and since have had a hard time with nerves and calming down, this helps.

really helps

This 5-HTP has been a great benefit to me. My state of mind, sense of well being and motivation have all improved on one dose daily, taken with one 250mg capsule of B6 (needed to absorb 5-HTP). A holistic doctor suggested I try this and I am very glad I did. After 2-3 days I noticed I was feeling better and after a week or two I was surprised at how effective this supplement is for me. My son has reported similar improvement.
